Key Committments: 2003-2006

Accountability

Jan Harder led Council in adopting an Independent Auditor General, creating Quarterly Budget Reviews and Quarterly Capital Works in Progress Reports.  These measures provide the public with status reports on the numerous Capital Projects currently underway. The publication of these reports will strengthen the public confidence in how the City manages your taxes by tighten the fiscal control of Council and ensuring taxpayers get value for their money.

Parks & Recreation

Jan Harder will continue the fight to restore an independent Parks & Recreation Department within the City of Ottawa. Nepean always had outstanding facilities and programs that its residents were proud of (Walter Baker Sports Center, Nepean Sportsplex, Centrepointe Theatre and Nepean Visual Arts). Parks & Recreation should be comprised of planning, programming, parks, park development and facilities management.

Transportation and Employment

Jan Harder will continue to work with staff, the development industry as well as the Federal and Provincial Governments to attract permanent employment and improve local infrastructure in Ward 3. The transfer of hundreds of new jobs to Bells Corners by the Canada Customs Revenue Agency and the continued discussions with the Department of National Defence about possibly acquiring the JDS Uniphase facility means people will have the opportunity to live and work in our community while maintaining a focus to reduce commuter traffic and improve local roadways.

Preserving Nepean Legacy

Jan Harder has always believed that Nepeans values are a cornerstone for good government. Its fiscal policies and its partnership in community development led the region for over 50 years. It is more important than ever before that we ensure that our quality of life is not impacted further and that we consolidate our services to meet the financial pressures of tomorrow.
